Ah, the beginning of the 2016 season. It’s Week 1, and I’m already sweating. If you’re like me, you have your fantasy teams on a separate window on your computer, constantly looking for a definitive answer while you pretend to work. I hope to be that definitive answer, even though I’m not entirely sure myself. Full disclosure, I do have Edelman on one of my teams.
Do I care?
Could this be viewed as a way for me to explain my worry while also potentially helping our audience?
This is my concern: Julian Edelman will be smothered by Patrick Peterson. If you didn’t know, Peterson is an All-Pro Corner who shut down the following receivers last year: AJ Green, Calvin Johnson, and Antonio Brown. It’s not even just Peterson! The entire Cardinals defense prevented 46% of passes to wide receivers from being completed last year. Factor in Jimmy Garoppolo at starting QB and I’m nervous, even in PPR formats.
This is my advice, something that I’m going to listen to myself (hopefully): Play Edelman in PPR, but not in Standard leagues. If you have an easier matchup with a little bit of a riskier player, go for it. I’m going to play Edelman in PPR because I think the Patriots will throw a couple of short screens to him early in order to force the Cardinals to press coverage. After that, I expect one or two shots down the field for Edelman.
Please God don’t let Chris Hogan take Edelman’s points away.
